Lorde is best known for her joyously unrestrained language, which was often spent on passionate stories of love and grief, race and identity politics – all laid bare in this collection of poems from her time living in Staten Island. She presented herself as part of a "continuum of women" a respect and acknowledgement of individuality and worth that should extend throughout society.
