This volume is a combination of conversation, photo album, and meditative reflection made manifest by the recording, transcription and editing of an interview held between Simon Pettet and Rudy Burckhardt in 1986. As the talk changes from one voice to another, the pages empty into white quiet, or the text turns to monologue, or the imagery moves us into the shade of a tall photograph, the light between New York streets. There is room in this exchange, formally as layout and conceptually, with the inclusion of Burckhardt’s photos and existential questions without answers, giving contour to the material at hand by pointing to everything that can’t be put into words; the strange sense of self we can be seen for, without ever having said.
