This volume is a careful consideration of Mie van der Rohe's (1886-1969) conceptual and material philosophies made manifest through his residential designs, specifically drawing from both the finished and unfinished projects from between 1923 to 1951. Wolf Tegethoff contributes a pervasive analysis of Rohe's creative relationship to space, demonstrating how his ideas opened up traditional concepts of structure and landscape to imagine new possible architectures for domestic modern design. Illustrated in colour and b&w.
This book was originally published to accompany an exhibition by the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, in conjunction with the Rohe Archive at the Museum of Modern Art, on the occasion of their public opening of the Lange and Esters Houses (Krefeld, 1981).
