People Around Here is an exhibition of drawings by the late Jason Polan. It is in part from his impossible quest of sketching everyone in New York City though here he is focused on Broadway and 29th Street. His muses, from the young and old, roam the city unaware of his eye, sometimes a single person or a crowd of faces. Polan is an incessant sketcher his figures are often charmingly unfinished or have multiple limbs, such as "MAN PLAYING FRISBEE" who is depicted with six arms. These figures, rather than looking freakish, show the movement Polan hopes to capture.
“If they are moving fast, the drawing is often very simple,” he said. “If they move or get up from a pose, I cannot cheat at all by filling in a leg that had been folded or an arm pointing. This is why some of the people in the drawings might have an extra arm or leg — it had moved while I was drawing them. I think, hope, this makes the drawings better.”
Polan depicts the everyday bustling New Yorker: the vendors, the park loungers, the musician on the street, those waiting on street corners. His work is a witty examination of human nature on a grand scale. Printed in a limited edition of 500 copies, this is a signed edition by the artist.
