In this "little book," published in English on the occasion of Proust's centenary year, theorist Gilles Deleuze discursively and creatively considers the infamous symbology that has come to constellate Proust's writing, legacy, and philosophy of life. Focusing on Proust's landmark "In Search of Lost Time" (or "Remembrance of Things Past"), Deleuze exposes the text as a texture of ciphers, at once dispersed and realized through the discursive recollection of its signs. Deleuze creates an accessible terrain for the reader to review Proust's enduring cryptography, and to deeply consider the meaning of a discourse "apprehended only by its sign or hieroglyph," the "accidental and inevitable" nature of significance as it is revealed through a textual life.
