This German- and English-language composition is a project in photography, challenging the presumption of documentary or historical intentions behind photo books that take up landmarks as their subjects. Instead, this collection of Swiss cottages was captured with an instinctive eye for that quality of "loveliness" they still possess, for how they came to stand for a country. Photographed by following the feeling that drifts through old houses, this volume represents that impulse to "hold fast" to a place simultaneously returning you somewhere familiar and bringing you to the verge of the close, inevitable extinction of its kind. Their work comes together as a sensitive series of black-and-white photographs, trying to catch up (or at least catch a last glimpse) with something already gone.
