SKETCH FOR A THEORY OF THE EMOTIONS BY JEAN-PAUL SARTRE

London. Methuen & Co Ltd. 1962. First English edition. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Jacket Condition: Fine. 94 pp.

This Sartre essay offers a valuable glimpse of the theorist's developing ideas on the nature of psychology, and foreshadows his later publications on the question of 'man-being-in-the-world.' At the time of the essay's publication, his ideas established Sartre as something of a renegade in the early hype of phenomenology. For rather than basing his system of ideas in any kind of Freudian unconscious, Sartre's drives are grounded in an emotion-based analysis that, as a text, prefigures his original and eventually major theories of the human condition.

Translated by Philip Mairet. Preface by Mary Warnock.
