On display from Dec. 1989-Jan. 1990 at the Braunstein/Quay Gallery in San Francisco, The Art of the Mountain Bike was curated by Edmond Russell as a "recognition of the extraordinary skill and creativity involved in bringing to life a unique machine." By isolating a bicycle in a gallery space, removed from transportation and retail contexts, the object became worthy of criticism and appreciation as a "functional sculpture." The Bay Area's finest bike frame builders were enlisted to offer one of their creations for the boundary-bending show, and the exhibition catalog includes personal statements from these builders, blurring the lines between utilitarian and creative intent.
