A collection of short stories in part from her first book, The Left Bank, and later stories written in 1939. Rhys began to write in the twenties after she was encouraged to by Ford Madox Ford. Her stories, inspired by her own life, often depict disenfranchised women in brief and meaningless encounters with others in places as equally lonely as they are. Her heroines, however sad or sordid, are never depressing but filled with charm and astringent humor in their detachment. The title coming from the opinion which many of Jean Rhys's characters share, that respectable people are as alarming as tigers, but "tigers are better-looking, aren't they?"
