This publication of Sir Thomas Brown's mystical, philosophical diptych was reprinted in 1963 in celebration of its 300th anniversary, with a new preface, modernized conventions, and annotations intended to make the text accessible to the contemporary reader. The esoteric and fascinating subject matter, however, remains the same: the first book, "Urne Buriall" (or "Hydriotaphia") is Brown's reflection on the discovery of a Roman urn, an object he first illustrates then ecstatically brings into conversation with his probing imagination, discussing mortality, mythology, man and God. The second book follows this impulse, further constellating his ideologies through examinations ranging from theories of the number 5 to "mystical visions" of the interconnectedness of all things; ultimately proposing a nature of philosophy borne of curiosity that still intrigues the faraway thinkers of today.
