De Maria's geometric repetitions intended to bring some sense of order to a cosmic existence which is both endless and unpredictable. His polished steel edges and level vats of earthly material show a personal control over the elements, but De Maria's ideas are often physically pressed up to the walls of gallery spaces, a solemn acknowledgement of the artist's limitations. The sheer size of the Earth Rooms or endlessly-repeating steel polyhedrons echo throughout the spaces they inhabit, as a grand statement of theater.
