A new edition of the 1976 anthology of French surrealist cinema, this volume takes the reader through the developing themes, techniques, and varying responses from figures in and studies of surrealist cinema to the twentieth-century's rapidly changing world. Intent on presenting a distinct and specific anthology of the key cinematic voices in the surrealist movement, the editors are selective in where they place their focus without sacrificing a historically-, culturally-conscious perspective on the traces of surrealism left in less-than-surrealist places. Focus is narrowed and made visual with the inclusion of black-and-white stills, reproductions, and photographs, featuring films from the Marx brothers, works by Man Ray and Léger, and ephemera like posters and adverts designed to represent a constantly evolving, ever avant-garde, surrealist point of view.
