‘The Book Was Better Film Festival’ is almost here!
For our 2nd annual film festival, we’ve partnering with VSCO, a community for expression, who will be hosting a film screening of the finalists in their bi-coastal offices — at VSCO NYC on October 15, and at VSCO HQ in Oakland, CA on October 22. We’ll hold a meet & greet & pop-up shops from Book/Shop & our sponsors before the screening, and prizes will be awarded afterwards. [We ended up with a tied vote for both 1st and 2nd Places in New York! This means we'll ALSO do a judging with different judges in Oakland to name final winners.] Refreshments will be served. In New York we'll have a Book/Shop popup featuring additional items from our sponsors available for sale. In Oakland you can take part in a selfie project based on the famous Proust Questionnaire, or participate in a round of Instant Library*!
LOCATIONS AND RESERVATIONS
We'll be hosting two screenings of the entries as part of events at both the New York and Oakland headquarters of VSCO.
The New York event will take place at 31 W 27th Street, 10th Floor, on Saturday, Oct. 15th, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM
The Oakland event will take place at 1500 Broadway on Saturday, Oct. 22nd, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM.
Tickets will be free but space is limited, so reserve you space now!
The films will be judged by a jury of 5 judges at the New York screening. Prizes will be awarded after judging that evening. The prizes will consist of large gift bags (including a Ballast Bookbag for the Grand Prize) loaded with items from Book/Shop and VSCO (the full suite of VSCO Film, etc.), as well as from our friends at C'H'C'M' (Dom Vetro sunglasses, etc.), Anglepoise (a Margaret Howell-edition reading lamp from the legendary English lighting company), Wms. & Co desk items, Neo-Utility pens, Hesperios Journal, and others! Winners will be announced at the New York screening. In the event that a winner is not present, their prizes will be shipped to them.

*Join us before the screening for a few rounds of 'Instant Library", a game based on the short story 'The Suicide Club' by Robert Louis Stevenson. You could win a shelf full of books!
There will be 6 players per round. BOOK/SHOP will provide a book or new magazine from their collection to each of the first players who sign up (up to two rounds/12 players total). Once seated, each player will be handed playing cards in turn until both the Ace of Clubs and Ace of Spades appear. The player who holds the Ace of Clubs must give up their book to the person who holds the Ace of Spades. That losing player is then eliminated from the game. This process is repeated until all players but one are eliminated. That remaining player will have won all the books of that round. An ‘instant library’, indeed!
