The story goes that Charles Bukowski pulled Ask the Dust from a shelf one day at the Los Angeles Public Library and reading it changed his life. His own, now very distinctive, voice in prose was heavily influenced by Fante's style. It was because of Bukowski's prodding that Martin re-printed Fante, as seen here, with Bukowski's introduction. Nearly lost to the sands of time, Ask the Dust is now considered an essential part of the American cannon.
