This artist book is first and foremost a work of creative translation: an occasion of exchange between poet St.-John Perse and artist Georges Braque that doubles itself back again. First, Perse's poem was inspired by a late series of Braque's abstract colour etchings. In turn, the text was both ekphrastic in its own right and then some, inspiring Braque himself to create a new series of the four colour etchings that appear here. In a luxuriously expansive large-form print edition, Braque's bright flights of colorful motion are made more vivid by St.-John Perse's flits of language, printed here in the original French with an English translation by poet Richard Fitzgerald.
