When one looks at who has referenced Basil Bunting's poetry as a major influence over their own work, it becomes clear that he is a poet's poet. Ezra Pound, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, and other key literary figures have taken after Bunting's impressive wealth of classic and historical allegories formal play to direct the ear or refer the eye to alternate and implicit meanings, and an intuitive free verse that bore major influence over what seemed to become a modern, individuated epic tradition. His contributions to English poetry is more than a bridge over the gap, but a permission for what seemed to manifest in a twentieth-century of ambitious poetics, governed by and told in a very human voice.
