Place d’Armes was published as a centennial gift to Canada from its author. In this context, Symon’s defiantly personal and provocative narrative is revolutionary for its both covert and direct subversion of the culture’s traditional, bourgeois imagination. Its subject matter was a transgressive landmark for gay literature, while it’s tight temporality and ambitious organization––switching from journal entries to novels-within-the-novel to asides, etc.––challenged expectations for the novel to be anything close to predictable.
Inner sleeve contains ephemera, including annotated maps, postcards, and news clippings related to the text. Inscribed.
