The title of this volume, and the context in which it was published, implies its own aura of scarcity. Translator Eleni Fourtouni announces, by virtue of publishing "Greek Women Poets" at all, the absence thereof in a time when women's voices were still being silenced, even in a postwar landscape, even in poetry. With a preface that describes Fourtouni's journey into the project and the painstaking editing process that went into this selection, the poems and biographies of the women who wrote them take on a weight of undeniable presence: declaring an I am here, these translations are also proof of shared experience. "Their combined voices are a chorus, singing of our despair, our anger, our joy."
