Sol Lewitt pays tribute to the influence of Albers on his artistic development through this wall drawing Seven Basic Colors and All Their Combinations in a Square Within a Square installed at the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop and reproduced here in vibrant color illustrations. Though Sol LeWitt and Josef Albers approached their work from divergent perspectives, they were most alike in their singular drive to avoid authorship and a hierarchy of importance within the artist's body of work. Alber's work was defined by serial long-term studies, so as to disavow any notion of value: a disciplined approach that Lewitt would also adopt in his prolific art practice.
