Dawn Visions, Daniel Moore’s first book, with cover art and in-text illustrations by the poet was published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti of City Lights Books, San Francisco, in 1964. . Moore later came to renounce written poetry and founded the "Floating Lotus Magic Opera Company" in San Francisco, which offered live stage productions to audiences at Berkeley’s Hinkel Park, free of charge.

When he became a Muslim in 1970, Moore took the name Abd al-Hayy, and began traveling extensively in Europe and North Africa.  Lawrence Ferlinghetti wrote of this period, “Moore [became] a Sufi and, like Rimbaud, renounced written poetry.”

After ten years of not writing, however, Moore “renounced” his renunciation, and he has since been very active writing and publishing work since the '90s.
