This is a volume of Dali in both text and image: part novel, part artist book, "Hidden Faces" is as saturated with imagination as it is devoid of any interest in the moral obligations to write a book with manners. His story is not subtle. Set at the end of WWII, his characters are almost as bent on escape as they are on keeping their lives decadent and indulgent, romantic and perverse, making love not war; but a kind of cruel love. Dali writes his images as bright and sharply as his illustrations, so you can see everything. Their kind of love was real; but it was riddled with obsession and betrayal and despite all the "bizarre passion" and undeniable connection between some, a determination to keep away from anyone who could take away the possibility of pain––remaining entwined, not held; and choosing to play, rather than escape.
