Rene Ricard (1946-2014), American poet and painter, was a prophetic figure of the 1970’s-80’s New York underground art scene. As both a poet and art writer, Ricard was able to relate to the artist's of his time as more insider than observer: his testaments to the changing pulse of that art scene were taken seriously by artists and critics alike. His poetic impulse carried over into the transitory way he left his work behind––the notebooks and pages of writing he would famously lose or give away. Significantly, through looking at his art, Ricard’s poem-paintings (c. 1980s) are able to transfix a portion of the writer’s notoriously ephemeral body of work. That sense of impermanence can be traced in these paintings-as-poems-as-commentary, through which Ricard’s narration of socialite gossip to ardent confessions demonstrate the relevance of language beyond its time.

This edition of Love is a facsimile reproduction of original painting (adjusted scale), created using the same offset-printing technique the artist used in later years. Produced in 2018 by exhibition a, limited edition of 100 of archival pigment prints.
