An Ōbaku monk and tea salesman, Baisao's poetry enshrines the spiritual connection between Zen Buddhism and the sencha tea ceremony. Considered the foundational sencha master, Baisao traveled around Kyoto brewing loose-leaf tea. Rather than selling at any set price, the monk would accept good-willed donations in return, carrying his mobile tea stand in a woven basket tied to a stick, slung over his shoulder, setting up at scenic viewpoints all over the city. He stressed the spiritual value of the tea ceremony, but in his elder years, burned his utensils in defiance of the adoration associated with past tea masters.
