This collection of poetry is one of the earliest works by LeRoi Jones, published before the seminal writer renamed himself and came to be known as Amira Baraka (1934–2014). This collection of poetry, somewhere between verse and free-verse, demonstrates a compulsive and instinctual effort to make the world legible by naming, by writing it down. This collection's specificity is offset by the poet's meditations on memory, community, and identity, dynamizing language itself in this early demonstration of Baraka's immutable voice.
