San Francisco. Celestial Arts. Vol. 1, No. 1. April 1970. Softcover. Book Condition: Near Fine, soft wear to pages over time. 96pp. (ill. in b.w)

This volume marked the inaugural issue of “Survival” Magazine, a Bay Area based periodical that began with an eponymously-titled statement from Channing Grisby, “Survival - Has it Really Come to That?” Though the anxieties expressed in these pages are in response to a 1970’s context, the unease in these pages is an eerie foreshadowing for the kind that preoccupies us today: “The Failure of Counter Culture,” “Doom and Gloom” (as it is passed from corporate and political powers to burden the individual), and even a collaboration between Kurt Vonnegut and photographer Jason Minkler, scattering the pages with environmental, existential concerns. Whatever the circumstances, whatever progress or cynicism, it’s clear the human preoccupation with survival will snare and obsess us all the same.
