This piece is an early work of the influential figure Amira Baraka, published under his earlier pseudonym, LeRoi Jones, in 1964. In the context of its time, the poems in this volume distinguish Jones from the theories and styles of the Beat generation that he'd previously been associated with. In this collection, Baraka's poems establish a kind of irrefutable voice, speaking from the influence of jazz structures, images of violence, and the experience of a black man writing to both reach through and refuse the conditions set by a white society.
