"The Heart of a Woman" is the fourth volume in Angelou's personal narrative series that started with "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Throughout these books, Angelou's writing dares to fill her with voice and take up narrative space in a way that is as intimate as it is significantly for her readers, in that it's so important for them to see her tell her story, and for them to get to hear. This installment starts with Angelou's major move to New York City, and follows from all that kicked off there––her part in the influential black arts scene, her interactions with historical figures, her developing career, and the changing relationship to motherhood as she begins to see her son as a man.
