The Irish-born writer Maeve Brennan was a friend of Truman Capote and was reputed to be the inspiration for Holly Golightly, the unforgettable protagonist of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. She wrote acute, sometimes melancholy, sometimes hilarious observations of everyday people and places in New York for the New Yorker magazine for 20 years, and the best of her 1960’s pieces are collected in “The Long-Winded Lady”. She was also a prolific writer of short stories.
