George Lyttelton was a classics and literature master at Eton, where he taught Rupert Hart-Davis. 25 years after Eton the men began a weekly correspondence, which they maintained until Lyttelton's death in 1968.
Rupert Hart-Davis was an editor, publisher, and author, described by The Times as the king of editors. Following the death of Lyttelton, Hart-Davis began editing their cache of letters and published the first volume in 1978.
