II. "The CoEvolution Quarterly,” Issue No. 27, 21 September 1980 (Sausalito: Point Publishing, 1980. First Edition.)
The next installment from editor Stewart Brand, this resurrection of the “Whole Earth Catalog” is also Issue No. 27 of his “CoEvolution Quarterly,” another widely-circulated publication. To call these thorough would be an insult to the editorial process that composed these pre-internet, collective cultural encyclopedias of access to exchange. Again under the heading "access to tools," the catalog is a compilation of advertisements from subscribers, who interpret (pretty loosely) the way their products fit the bill. Sections include “Soft Technologies,” “Livestock,” “Folkwear,” “Organic Food,” and even “Birth Control.” Our world used to be a library of paper records, and 'The World' catalog was once a search engine. Now, a historical text-object, this is the kind of artifact a generation z book-lover might have to see to believe.
