De Maria's '2000 Sculpture' became one of the largest horizontal sculptures designed for an indoor show, covering 500 square meters at Kunsthaus Zürich with 2000 white plaster rods. Each individual rod has either five, seven or nine sides, and they are organized in a specified, repetitive pattern: 5–7–9–7–5–5–7–9–7–5. The visual momentum of the seemingly endless arrangement both draws in and pushes away the viewer depending on where they stand, manipulating light and perception within massive spaces.
