Tokyo: The Rockmay Press, [c. 1956]. Hardcover.  Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good with distinct sunning from metal bookend. Else fine with no chips or tears. Features a period Tokyo bookseller’s label on the inside back cover

A vintage underground (bootleg) trade edition of D. H. Lawrence’s notorious masterwork, capturing the mid-century illicit publishing phenomenon surrounding the unexpurgated text. 380 pp

N.B. We don’t normally sell books with such distinct fading, but the tenderness and beautiful shapes left by an old bookend on this vintage Japanese paper jacket were too good to pass up. The text is soft & slightly blurred where the sun faded it, but remains crisp and sharp where protected. Every so often, damage enhances a book’s beauty. This copy’s top edge has a beautiful pale apricot dye and the text block features a wonderfully pronounced concave fore edge. A very nice little copy printed when the book was a thrilling pice of cultural contraband.
